Kwon is a French painter of South Korean origin, born on June 8, 1972, in Suwon (South Korea). He received an academic artistic education in Seoul and obtained a teaching diploma in art in 1991, before becoming a drawing teacher in his home country. Seeking to enrich his practice, he then moved to the United States, where he notably engaged with hyperrealism and further developed his pictorial technique. An atypical path: from the Foreign Legion to official painting. In 1999, he enlisted in the French Foreign Legion for a period of five years. There, he worked as a draftsman and illustrator, notably for the military magazine Képi blanc and for publications of the Ministry of Defense. After this experience, he settled permanently in France and fully embarked on his artistic career. His talent was quickly recognized: 2003: appointed Official Painter of the French Army; 2005: Official Painter of the Air and Space Force; 2012: Official Painter of the Navy; 2020: Official Painter of the National Gendarmerie. He thus belongs to the very select circle of official painters of the French armed forces. Work and style: Kwon works mainly with oil and acrylic. His painting is often described as instinctive and spontaneous, structured by dynamic colorful brushstrokes, oscillating between figuration and abstraction. His subjects are varied: landscapes (urban or natural), military or maritime scenes, portraits, and animals. Light and material play a central role in his work, giving his pieces a strong visual intensity. Recognition and career: he exhibits in France and in Asia (Korea, Japan, China) and takes part in numerous exhibitions, both civilian and military, where he has received several distinctions. He is also a member of the Fondation Taylor, a mark of recognition in the French art world. Today, he lives and works in France (notably in the Centre region / Eure-et-Loir or in Paris depending on the period).
